The Hamden Art League will present its 57th Annual Goldenbells Art Exhibition April 10 - 26, 2012 at the Miller Memorial Library Senior Center, 2901 Dixwell Avenue (rear entrance), Hamden. Works by HAL members and non-members from throughout the area will be on display. The show will feature a variety of original artwork in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor and mixed media.

Hamden resident Cham Hendon will serve as juror for this year's awards.

Several awards donated by local benefactors and businesses will be presented at the Opening Reception on Tuesday, April 10th from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Senior Center. In addition, there will be a raffle of a watercolor painting donated by Hamden artist and HAL member Emily Bett to support the Hamden Art League annual Art Scholarship fund. The scholarship will be awarded in the spring to a promising Hamden High School senior planning to further his or her education in the visual art field.

The exhibition is open to the public. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Social Hall of the Senior Center. For further info on the Hamden Art League: www.hamdenartleague.com

I am a recently retired art teacher and the new School Liaison at Gallery 53.

We are undergoing some big changes here at the Gallery, our website for one. It is gallery53.org. We are looking to expand our exhibitions, classes and let you know about our First Friday reception, a wine and cheese reception every First Friday of the month from 4-7.

If you have any members that would like to teach classes we have a very large teaching studio upstairs.

Artist of the Month

HAL will begin a program of featuring the artwork of one of it's members each month on our website.
This program is open to Hamden Art League Members only.

If you are an interested member please email 4 to 12 JPG images to George Manning. Please include "HAL ARTIST OF THE MONTH" in the subject area. George's email address

Each image should be ready for posting, and no larger than 2MB in size.
Your submissions should include the title of the painting, and medium as well as your name and telephone number in case you need to be reached.

In addition, please submit a short biography to be posted with the images. (No longer than 200 words.)

All artwork should be submitted by 3/31/12. Twelve artists will be selected by a subcommittee of the board. Selection in the program shall occur by random selection. If selected, members are ineligible for a 3 year period.

The next submission date shall be 12/31/12 and yearly thereafter.

Figure in Landscape Workshop - Watercolor with Don Andrews - April 2012

Learn techniques to improve your watercolor paintings in a week-long watercolor workshop with Don Andrews. Painting under the direction of this experienced and popular workshop leader, you will learn how to mix your colors on the page, capture the light, organize nature, utilize negative space, loosen up your work and more.

The class will run from April 23 through April 27 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily in the Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street at the Flagpole, Newtown, CT 06470. Wednesday afternoon there will be a demonstration open to the public. The total cost of the workshop is $375, which may be paid in two installments. The Instructor:
Don Andrews is a graduate of the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida. His most recently published book is Interpreting the Landscape in Watercolor. In addition, he is the author of Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor and Rough Sketches: Short stories of a Traveling Artist, as well as the video, Making Watercolor Glow. He has had numerous articles featured in American Artist magazine, and he is featured in the Watson Guptill publication, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Watercolor.

Don is an active member and past board member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS). His paintings have received numerous awards in national watercolor competitions, including three awards from AWS. To view Don's paintings and learn more about him, visit his website, www.donandrews.net.

1) Christ Presbyterian Church 135 Whitney Ave.,New Haven, CT has wall space in the church fellowship hall for art exhibitions and can be available for receptions as new exhibitions are installed.

2) Size of framed art should not exceed 36" Any medium is accepted including photography except sculpture. There is no charge for installing art and the church art committee reserves the right of refusal of any artwork presented.
3) Art must be framed and wired for hanging, no brackets please.

4) No commission will be paid to the church and it's expected work will remain in place for 4-6 weeks.

5) We show artwork of any medium that can go on the wall. As the room is used by many children, we do not feel we can adequately protect sculpture. Our only other rule is that work be appropriate for audiences of all ages. If you wouldn't want to explain it to a 3 year old, chances are others don't want to either. Lastly, if you are willing to share about your work, we love having art openings!

A Juried Exhibit /Sale to jointly benefit the Connecticut Humane Society

Call for Submissions.

This exhibit/sale will feature crafts and art works in all media intended for, or inspired by, man's best friend and all beloved pets. We are looking to include:

fine art and objects inspired by pets—paintings, sculptures, mixed-media works, pet-shaped/inspired items like cutting boards, mugs, plates, jewelry, mixed media works handmade accessories (collars, leashes, coats, etc) functional items (wooden dog houses, pottery food bowls, pillows, beds) pet portraits and more!

A portion of proceeds from sales of works will benefit the Connecticut Humane Society.

Exhibit Dates: May 4-June 24, 2012.

Jurors: Guilford Art Center staff

Eligibility: This exhibition is open to works in all media, including mixed media. Open to U.S. residents of all ages.

Entries: Each artist may submit an unlimited number of works. Images of representative works must be emailed in high resolution digital format. For each entry please note, if relevant: Title; Media; Size/Dimensions; Retail price. Email entries to: gallery@guilfordartcenter.org.

Entry Fee: $20.00. Includes unlimited number of submissions. Make check payable to Guilford Art Center and mail to 411 Church Street, Guilford, CT 06437. Or call the Center with credit card number (203-453-5947).

Entry Deadline: April 2. Digital images and entry fee must be received by this date.

Conditions: All entries must be original and must be completed within the last 2 years. Weight may not exceed 200 lbs. The Center reserves the right to reject entries that do not meet these requirements or is deemed unstable. Shipped work that differs from submitted images will not be accepted. Work damaged in shipping will regretfully not be presented. All accepted work must have proper identification. No accepted work may be picked up before the closing of the exhibition. Work may be available for sale or must be identified as NFS. The retail price or insurance value provided on the entry form will be used; no changes may be made after the work is shipped.

Shipping: Shipping costs are the responsibility of the artist. A check for return shipping, including the cost of insurance, must accompany delivered work, payable to Guilford Art Center. Work damaged in shipping will not be presented. Detailed packing/unpacking/handling instructions must accompany all shipped or hand delivered works. Please label all packing materials.

Hand Delivery: Hand-delivered work is the responsibility of the artist. Please call the Center to make an appointment for hand delivery/pickup at 203.453.5947 x12, or email gallery@guilfordartcenter.org.

Receiving Deadline: April 16-20. All work must be received no later than these dates.

Sales/Commissions to benefit exhibiting artists, GAC, and Connecticut Humane Society: Proceeds from all works sold will be split between the artist (50%) and Guilford Art Center (50%); the Art Center will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Connecticut Human Society. Artists will receive commission check for sold work following close of the exhibition.

Insurance: Artists must indicate sale price and insurance value. Submission of work to this exhibit is done so at the artist's risk and implies an agreement on the part of the artist to all the conditions of this Call for Submission. GAC will not be responsible for loss or damage to work in transit, however, work will be insured while in the Guilford Art Center facility.

Publicity: Guilford Art Center reserves the right to photograph entries for the purposes of documentation, education and publicity. Accepted artists are encouraged to send to the Center a resume, artist statement, brochures, and additional photographic materials of the accepted work for publicity purposes.
